 P. Maximino Alegre Castellanos

Luke continued his studies at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy in 1953 and completed his studies for the priesthood at Holy Name College, Washington, D.C. in 1955.  Returning to Catholic University, he was awarded a Master of Science Degree in Physics in 1960.

Over the years, Father studied and spoke several languages: Italian, Spanish, French, German and Neomelianesian (Pidgen).

As a Trinitarian priest, Father Luke lived in several communities throughout the Order and held numerous offices and responsibilities.  He was a faculty member of DeMatha Catholic High School, teaching religion, physics, algebra, chemistry, mathematics and trigonometry from 1957 to 1966.  He also taught mathematics and chemistry at Trinitarian College, Pikesville, Maryland from 1956 to 1966.  As a weekend assignment, Father was as a part time chaplain of Rahway State Prison, Rahway, New Jersey from 1958 to 1966.  His interest in prison ministry brought him to the Maryland House of Corrections for Men and the House of Corrections for Women in Jessup, Maryland, serving as a chaplain from 1966 to 1971.

From 1968 to 1971, Father Luke served as Minister Provincial for the American Province of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  He was the first American born to hold this position and the last Provincial to be elected by the General Definitorium in Rome.  Upon completion of his term as Minister Provincial, Father Luke was assigned to St. James Church as Pastor of his home parish, in Trenton, New Jersey from 1971 to 1974.  Fulfilling a dream to serve as a missionary in the Order, Father was assigned to our Trinitarian Missions of Madagascar from 1974 to 1979.  Responding to an appeal by the Generalate in Rome, the American Province opened a mission in Papua, New Guinea.  Fr. Upon his return to the United States in 1991, Father was appointed Parochial Vicar of our Trinitarian Parish of Christ the King Church, Corpus Christi, Texas.  It was there that he formed a Trinitarian Third Order of over seventy members, which today continues to be a vibrant group in the parish.

In the 1995 General Chapter held in Baltimore, Maryland, Father Luke was elected as a General Councilor and was given the responsibility to oversee the missionary activity of the Order.

When he returned from Rome to the United States in 2001, Father was again assigned as Parochial Vicar of Christ the King Parish, Corpus Christi, Texas, serving there until 2004.  From 2004 to 2006, he was appointed as Parochial Vicar of our Trinitarian Parish of Santa Clara, Dallas, Texas.  Since 2006, Father has been a member of our Trinitarian Community of Victoria, Texas.

Father Luke’s curriculum vitae reveals an outstanding Trinitarian whose dedicated service and a plethora of personal human resources enabled him to serve both the Order and the Church with untiring zeal and commitment.  No undertaking was impossible for Father Luke, whose faith and trust in God led him to numerous parts of the world.  He was a true disciple of Christ and a devoted follower of our Holy Founder, St. John DeMatha.  His pastoral care made an indelible mark in the lives of countless people whom he served.  It is also important to underscore how Father Luke enjoyed the respect and admiration of his Trinitarian Brothers throughout the world for his years as a missionary and his firm resolve to respond wholeheartedly to whatever the Order asked of him.

Father Luke is survived by his brother, Rocco Mennella of Maryland and his sister, Bridget Zamparelli of New Jersey.  He is also survived by many nephews and nieces.  His brother Donato  preceded him in death.
